Mactracker and Jaguar

With the beta releases of 4.1 requiring at least Mac OS X v10.3.9, I have received a few inquiries about the lack of support for v10.2.

I plan to release version 4.0.7 for 10.2 alongside the final version of 4.1. 4.0.7 will primarily be a database update and will not include all of the new features that are available in 4.1.

Link to Mactracker from other apps

One of the new features in 4.1b2 is support for the "mactracker://" URI scheme. With this scheme you can create a link to have Mactracker take you to a specific info window from another application like Safari, iChat, or your company's service/inventory/client database.

Simply open an info window and select "Show Model Hyperlink" from the "Edit" menu. In the "Link" window that appears you have two choices for creating a link; "Address only" and "Address with HTML source". The latter is likely best for use on web pages and forum posts.

An example of "Address only":

mactracker://ABA79B4E-3781-4053-8D73-AC46D16CE643

An example of posting the "Address with HTML source" link:

Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White)

Mactracker 4.0 (and later) also supports receiving AppleEvents from applications like FileMaker Pro. I have included an example within Mactracker's application package.

- Adds "This Mac" button to "My Mac models" addition window to retrieve current Mac's name and serial number
- Adds Motion Sensor as separate entry rather than as an addition to Hard Drive entry
- Adds ability to link to info windows using the "mactracker://" URL
- Update functionality now respects system proxy settings
- Other minor changes and additions

Update on Mactracker + Universal Binary

REAL Software announced that they will release a version of REALbasic that can create universal binaries (enables an app to run natively on both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs) in September. I will release a universal binary version of Mactracker as soon as possible once this new REALbasic version ships.

Site Back Up

Mactracker.ca should be back up for everyone now, barring any lingering DNS issues. I have made arrangements to ensure this doesn't happen again. Apologies for the downtime!

Mactracker 4.0.5

Version 4.0.5 includes the latest Apple hardware along with a number of smaller changes and additions. This release also fixes an issue where Mactracker wouldn't run properly under a non-administrator account on Windows.

Mactracker and Universal Binaries

I plan to provide a universal version once my compiler, REALbasic, is updated to support the creation of Universal Binaries. REAL Software anticipates this release as being available "later this year". Moving to Apple's Xcode is not currently an option as I wish to continue offering Mactracker for other platforms.
